When Solar Eclipse 2023 Floored NASA Astronomer
NASA astronomer Henry Throop was among those at Exmouth loudly cheering the eclipse in the darkness. "Isn't it incredible? This is so fantastic. It was mind-blowing. It was so sharp and it was so bright. You could see the corona around the sun there," the visibly excited Washington resident told Australian Broadcasting Corp. "It's only a minute long, but it really felt like a long time. There's nothing else you can see which looks like that. It was just awesome. Spectacular. And then you could see Jupiter and Mercury and to be able to see those at the same time during the day ? even seeing Mercury at all is pretty rare. So that was just awesome," Throop added.

Indonesia And Australia Witness Rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse
Around 20,000 eclipse chasers gathered under a cloudless sky in the northwest Australian coastal town of Exmouth to enjoy a rare total solar eclipse that plunged the region into darkness for about a minute late Thursday morning. The remote tourist town with fewer than 3,000 residents was promoted as one of the best vantage points in Australia to see the eclipse that also crossed remote parts of Indonesia and East Timor. In Indonesia's capital, hundreds came to the Jakarta Planetarium to see the partial eclipse, obscured by clouds.

Hybrid Solar Eclipse: A Rare Celestial Event
Today's eclipse is a hybrid solar eclipse. Such celestial events happen about once every decade: The last one was in 2013 and the next one isn't until 2031. They occur when Earth is in the "sweet spot" so the moon and the sun are almost the exact same size in the sky, NASA solar expert Michael Kirk was quoted by PTI. At some points, the moon is a little closer and blocks out the sun in a total eclipse. But when the moon is a little farther away, it lets some of the sun's light peek out in an annular eclipse.
Surya Grahan: Dos And Don'ts During An Eclipse
1) Always use the right filter, such as aluminized Mylar, black polymer, and welding glass of shade number 14 while viewing an eclipse. You can also project the image of the Sun using a telescope onto a whiteboard.
2) Never substitute regular sunglasses for solar viewing or eclipse glasses.
3) Do not use your camera to record the eclipse. Without appropriate glasses, Sun's intense rays damaging your eyes are a high possibility.
4) Children should be kept away from viewing a solar eclipse as they are unlikely to follow safety precautions rigorously.

Surya Grahan 2023: Difference Between Hybrid Solar Eclipse And Total Solar Eclipse
When the moon completely obscures the sun, a total eclipse occurs. When the moon obscures the sun but appears smaller, leaving the outline of a solar ring, an annular eclipse takes place. A hybrid eclipse is really rare and it takes place when both (annular and total) occur at the same time.

Solar Eclipse 2023: 4 Types Of Surya Grahans
There are several types of eclipses - Total, Annular, Hybrid, and Partial. April 20's solar eclipse will be a Hybrid Eclipse.
Surya Grahan 2023: A Rare Hybrid Eclipse
The first eclipse is also going to be a rare one - it's a hybrid solar eclipse where the eclipse will shift from a total solar eclipse to an Annular (ring-shaped) eclipse because the moon's shadow will move across the earth's surface.
The first solar eclipse of the year took place today, on April 20, 2023. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, obscuring the view of the Sun from a small part of the Earth, totally or partially. As NASA points out, this only happens occasionally, because the Moon doesn't orbit in the exact same plane as the Sun and Earth do. The time when they are aligned is known as eclipse season, which happens twice a year. There are several types of eclipses - Total, Annular, Hybrid, and Partial. "In a total eclipse, the Moon entirely blocks the Sun allowing people in the eclipse's path to see the star's corona – outer atmosphere. Total eclipses are the only type where viewers can momentarily remove their eclipse glasses. In an annular eclipse, the Moon perfectly lines up with the Sun but is farther away from the surface of Earth and does not fully cover the Sun's face. Hybrid eclipses shift from annular to total due to our planet's curve. In partial eclipses, the Moon is not fully lined up with the Sun, only partially covering its bright face," shares NASA.
The April 20 solar eclipse was a rare one - a Hybrid solar eclipse that last took place in 2013. While it was not directly visible from India, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, East and South Asia, Antarctica, and the Indian Ocean will witness the solar eclipse. But Indians could watch the eclipse on TimeAndDate.com's live stream on their YouTube channel. Many also checked out live streams on NASA's YouTube channel.
