Guwahati, Nov 10: The Assam government is contemplating to provide arms training to the community police `Village Defence Party' (VDP) to assist the security forces in fighting insurgents. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here today that arms training would be given to strengthen and revitalise the VDP in combating militancy.

Though it was a voluntary outfit, he said, there was a necessity for training the VDP in the use of weapons and also provide them with arms, if necessary, in times of emergency.

The VDP's primary job was to work at the grassroot level by protecting the villages, passing information to the government and also to be attached to the police stations to assist in their operations, he added.
Another civil defence organ of the government is the home guards who are also trained to use arms and receive salaries and live in barracks.

Referring to the public resisting and lynching of NDFB ultras in Dhubri district on Saturday, the chief minister said it was a positive sign and he had already instructed the Director General of Police to reward the concerned members of the public.
