More than 11,000 homes were destroyed as a result of Saturday's quake -- whose preliminary magnitude was 7.9 on the Richter Scale -- Peru's National Institute of Civil Defence said. Some 46,460 people have been left homeless in the disaster.
Arequipa is the worst hit area. There 73 people have died in all, 53 have disappeared, and nearly 1,000 houses have been affected.
Mocegua, a department that is also in southern Peru, also suffered dramatically from the earthquake's impact, local authorities' figure of 23 dead was at variance with civil defence figures of 16.
