Agartala, Sep 01: Police rescued an abducted chairman of a Block Development Committee (BDC) from the clutches of the banned NLFT and apprehended two ultras of the outfit in separate incidents, police said today. A group of ultras last night entered the house of the chairman of Melaghar block development committee and a ruling Left Front leader, Banisingh Debbarma, at Moniramchaudhuripara in West Tripura district and kidnapped him at gun point.

On receiving information about the kidnap security forces cordened off the escape route and opened fire which the ultras answered, they said.

The ultras were, however, forced to free Debbarma in the face of heavy resistance by the forces and fled from the village, police added.
Later, a massive search operation was launched in the area to track down the insurgents, police said.

In separate incidents, police arrested two NLFT ultras from Biswayan Para village of Dhalai district and Jirania village of West Tripura district yesterday, police said.
