Shillong, May 28: The bandh today in four districts of Meghalaya, called by Khasi Students Union (KSU) to protest a shootout in the city on Friday that claimed one life, evoked ‘partial’ response although normal life was affected in the state capital.
The 12-hour bandh has not affected normal life in Jaintia
hills district while it was partial in west Khasi hills and
Ri-Bhoi districts. In the east Khasi hills, except Shillong,
there was not much effect of the bandh, DIG police (eastern
range) B L Buam told here.
There were no reports of any untoward incident so far, he said.
The state capital Shillong, however, wore a deserted look with all shops, central and state government offices remaining closed. Police pickets were posted and patrolling vehicles were seen on the main thoroughfares.
Police escort was also provided for those passenger vehicles plying on the national highway through Shillong, although no public transport was available.
The bandh was called by the KSU to protest a shoot-out incident in a city locality on Friday night which claimed a civilian's life and injured a CRPF personnel.
Blaming the CRPF for creating trouble, the KSU also demanded its withdrawal from the urban areas of the town.
The state government replaced the CRPF with Meghalaya police battalion in the particular locality and ordered the DIG (eastern range) to inquire into the incident.
