Port Blair, Feb 14: The Centre has decided to accord international status to Port Blair airport recently renamed Savarkar Airport by deputy prime minister L K Advani, minister of state for civil aviation Shripad Naik has announced.

"There is some obstacle in completing the extension work of the runway at Port Blair which has been sorted out," Naik told reporters here yesterday. The work, he said, is expected to be accomplished by June 2003, after which the long pending demand of the islanders would be met. Giving an account of the expenditure incurred on the airport works, Naik said, Rs 20 crores have been spent on the terminal building and the runway alone while civil and electrical works have costed Rs 44 lakh.

He said that nearly 7.5 laks has been spent on the drainage system.

Referring to the Prime Minister's announcement on starting "Pawan Hans inter-island helicopter service with a 90% subsidy to the islanders, during a recent Island Development Authority (IDA) meeting held here he said that a contract has been signed between Pawan Hans and the local administration and the service is expected to commence by March this year.

Nine-seater helicopter would be pressed into service initially and this may be increased as per the local requirements, he said.
