Bangalore, Feb 21: Union Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources M Kannappan on Friday said the government was likely to bring out a "Renewable Energy Policy Statement" in the immediate future. The policy would set vision, goals and strategies for the government, R&D organisations, educational institutions and the private sector towards development of appropriate technology and increasing the harnessing of energy from renewables at economical cost, he said.

The minister was delivering the Presidential address at the inaugural of the "Clean 2003" conference on renewable energy for the next decade here.
Kannappan said the government was in the process of motivating state governments for adoption of a declared renewable energy policy.
"Further growth of renewables will depend on how we address the technology development and maturity issues, institutional problems and motivate industry to further take up renewable energy ventures," he told the conference attended by over 400 delegates including from abroad.
Kannappan called for a new approach in creating an enabling environment for technology development and deployment, quality assurance, credit infrastructure, legislative support and regulatory support for promoting renewable energy. Bureau Report
