Agartala, Mar 10: The ruling CPI (M)-led Left Front has re-nominated its incumbent Rajya Sabha member Matilal Sarkar for the March 26 election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Tripura. The Left Front said in a release here today that Sarkar, a renowned educationist-turned-politician, would be their nominee for the coming election to the lone seat of the upper house of Parliament from the state. Opposition Congress and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) are yet to announce their decision whether to contest the poll.
The statutory notification for the march 26 election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Tripura was issued yesterday, inviting nomination for the lone seat.

Officials of the state election department said here that according to an election commission press note, term of the 13 members of the Rajya Sabha elected from six states was due to expire next month.

The EC has decided that the biennial elections to the council of states (Rajya Sabha) of these 13 seats would be held on March 26, they added.

Counting of votes will also be held on March 26, immediately after the completion of polling.

Tripura Legislative Assembly Secretary Dilip Kumar Daschowdhury has been appointed as the returning officer for the election.

In the assembly the CPI (M)-led Left Front has a strength of 41, Congress 13 and INPT six. The INPT has recently joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after snapping its ties with the Congress.
