Jakarta Feb 17: Dengue fever has killed at least 80 people in seven provinces the first six weeks of this year, and infected an additional 4,800, officials said today. In the capital Jakarta, the mosquito-borne disease has killed 18 people of 2,600 cases, health ministry spokesperson Mariani said. Crowded East Java province has reported 36 deaths. Mariani said dengue fever also hit five other provinces, those being West and Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi. A total of 4,800 people were hospitalised and 80 have died across the seven provinces, Mariani said. The number of cases continues to rise in Jakarta, with 472 new cases reported in the past three days, according to figures complied by the Jakarta health agency. Dengue, a viral disease characterised by high fever, headaches and aching joints, is transmitted by the aedes aegypty, a mosquito that feeds during the daytime and lays its eggs in stagnant pools of water that are ubiquitous in rain-soaked, flood-prone Jakarta.
