New Delhi, Nov 07: Dispelling speculation that he would seek re-election from a general seat in the wake of the controversy over his tribal status, Congress today decided to field Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi from Marwahi, a reserved scheduled tribe constituency.
Releasing the first list of 73 candidates at a crowded press conference here, party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy made it clear that Jogi had no plans to contest from two constituencies.
While former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and currently a member of Lok Sabha Shyama Charan Shukla's son Amitesh Shukla, a minister in the Jogi government, will contest from Rajim, AICC general secretary and former governor Moti Lal Vora's son Arun Vora will try his luck from Durg.
Replying to a question, Reddy said that the remaining 17 seats would be finalised shortly. Chattisgarh assembly has a strength of 90.
Of the 73 candidates finalised today by the central election committee, 45 are sitting MLAs.
Currently the Congress has 62 MLAs in the House including those who had joined Congress after quitting BJP and BSP, Reddy said.
Asked how many sitting MLAs have been dropped, Reddy said that this would be known only after candidates for all the seats were finalised.
Of those cleared today, 30 belonged to scheduled tribes, seven to scheduled castes and 14 to other backward classes, he said, adding only seven women have been accommodated in the first list.
