Toronto, May 09: Canada supports lifting UN sanctions against Iraq, the department of foreign affairs has said. "Canada has called for the lifting of UN sanctions under the conditions currently prevailing in Iraq," spokeswoman Marie-Christine Lilkoff said yesterday.

"We understand that the US will shortly be presenting a draft resolution on the lifting of UN sanctions," she added. The United States asked for a UN Security Council meeting on Iraq today. The draft resolution -- to be jointly presented by the United States, Britain and Spain -- is expected to be distributed at the Security Council today.

Diplomats in New York said no decision was likely before May 24, at the earliest. Canada refused to participate in the US-led war against Iraq, saying it would only do so if approved by the United Nations. The refusal sparked a rebuke from the US ambassador to Canada, Paul Cellucci, in late March.
