New Delhi, May 13: Counting of votes cast in the 14th Lok Sabha elections has begun, ending the suspense over the nature of government to be formed at the Centre. Simultaneously, vote counting will also be held in the assembly elections in three states -- Karnataka, Orissa and Sikkim.
Trends are expected to be available within a couple of hours after the exercise begins at 0700 hrs and the results for most of the 542 Lok Sabha seats are expected to be available by the afternoon. Polling was held in five phases -- April 20, 22 and 26 and May 5 and 10 -- for 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. Election in Bihar`s Chapra constituency, held on April 26 has been countermanded following complaints of rigging. Fresh polling is slated for May 31 for the Chapra seat, contested by former chief minister and RJD supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav and civil aviation minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP).
Counting in the elections to the Andhra Pradesh assembly, which also had gone to polls simultaneously, was taken up early in view of constitutional compulsions. The Congress, which fought the elections in alliance with the Telengana Rashtra Samithi and the left parties, has registered a landslide victory securing absolute majority on its own in the 294-member house. The alliance has two third majority in the assembly, while the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) could secure only 47 seats.
More than 55 per cent of the total voters had cast ballots in the Lok Sabha polls.
Counting comes amid fears of a hung Parliament as projected by the Exit Polls, which have triggered a flurry of political activities with the two main rivals, the BJP and the Congress, trying to reach out for new allies to shore up their chances in the event of a fractured verdict.
Election officials will reach the counting centres at 0700 hrs and the vote count will begin at 0800 hrs, the commission said. Of the 543 seats, three seats in Bihar and one in Manipur will go in for a re-poll, 1214 counting centres spread over 855 cities have been set up by the Election Commission.
Major trends of counting of votes for the Lok Sabha polls are likely to be available by mid-afternoon. The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to make the results available on the Internet. Adequate security personnel, including central paramilitary forces, have been deployed in and around counting centres.
