New Delhi, May 01: Justice S Rajendra Babu, who will be sworn-in as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) tomorrow, today said it is necessary to reduce increasing pressure on courts and Lok Adalats can play a significant role in this regard. Justice Babu, was addressing a meeting of judicial services officers of all the states here. He said the Lok Adalats were doing a good job but the state governments needed to do more.
Justice Babu will be sworn-in as the 34th Chief Justice of India by President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on Sunday. The incumbent Chief Justice V N Khare retires on May 02.
The new CJI will hold office only for 31 days as he is due to retire on June 01. Union Law minister Arun Jaitley who was also present, said that there was a need to change the mentality of people sitting in government as well as in legal fraternity to bring about a change in the judicial system.
