Ahmedabad, Jan 07: Daman police have launched a manhunt to nab the two assailants who shot dead Kalubhai Fakirbhai Patel, a senior Congress leader, outside a temple in the town yesterday, even as the union territory today observed a bandh in response to a call given by the party. Police said the gunmen could be "hired" killers and did not appear to be from the union territory.
Initially, it was reported that there were three gunmen who shot dead 70-year old Patel but today police confirmed there were two of them on a Yamaha motorcycle.
Additional inspector general of police Anita Roy told that they had some clues about the identity of the killers and they did not appear to be from the region. However, Roy said she would not like to reveal more details at this stage.
"Eyewitnesses say the suspected duo were seen speeding towards Vatar village in Valsad district of Gujarat on their motorcycle and we have alerted all police units, checkposts and entry points of the state," said Roy.
No central forces have been requisitioned but one company of the reserve battalion has been deployed in the region, she said.
Meanwhile, the Congress leader was cremated yesterday and a 'Shanti Sabha' was held today at the Jalaram temple, where he was shot dead. Bureau Report
