New Delhi, Jan 22: CBI today recovered Rs one crore in cash during searches at the residence of a senior Income-Tax officer after he and his conduit in Jharkhand were arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh to settle Income-Tax account of a person. Swarn singh, Assistant Director (Investigation) posted at Dhanbad was arrested along with a private person Tinku Chaurasia, who was acting as 'conduit' to receive the money on behalf of the officer, agency sources said here.
Chaurasia was trapped accepting Rs one lakh, CBI claimed. Immediately after their arrest, the CBI conducted searches at the residential premises of Singh and recovered Rs one crore in cash besides jewellery and documents of several properties worth lakhs of rupees.
The counting of the cash was still continuing and the scrutiny of the bank account was yet to be done, CBI said adding lockers owned by the officer was also to be opened.
