Manila, Mar 12: The Philippines and India today signed an Extradition Treaty aimed at facilitating the exchange of criminals between the two countries. Justice secretary Merceditas Gutierrez and Indian ambassador to the Philippines Navrekha Sharma signed the treaties in Manila. ''The agreement promises to be of tremendous mutual benefits to our countries,'' Gutierrez said. ''Today, more so than ever, no country in the world can truly confine the protection of their own people against criminality within their borders alone.''
Gutierrez said the Extradition Treaty with India was the first to be signed by the Philippines with a South Asian country. Gutierrez said the treaty will take effect after it is ratified by the legislatures of both countries.
