New Delhi, Apr 27: The Comptroller and Auditor General has warned that the absence of data on construction of over one lakh railway bridges, many of them over 80 years old, may hamper their proper monitoring. "Railway administrations are not having complete and proper records pertaining to the railway bridges and it is imperative that proper records of construction of bridges are maintained for monitoring the bridge works", the CAG report tabled in parliament said. It said out of 1,27,154 bridges of Indian Railways as on March 31, 2002, 36,850 bridges (28.98 per cent) were built prior to 1900 and 19,319 (15.19 per cent) were built between 1901 and 1920. The sub-committee on re-building of old railway bridges had recommended that all bridges, which have been constructed at the same time as those which are showing distress in a particular section, should be closely observed and periodically inspected. "Though this was accepted by the railway board, the absence of basic information regarding date of construction of such bridges may hamper their proper monitoring", the report said. Bureau Report
