New Delhi, Feb 08: T S Krishnamurthy this morning formally took charge as the country’s Chief Election Officer after his J M Lyngdoh laid down office yesterday. Krishnamurthy’s first assignment will be to oversee the coming Lok Sabha elections. He was appointed EC in January, 2000 and will remain CEC till May, 2005 when he will be 65 years beyond which a person cannot continue in that post.
Krishnamurthy had on the announcement of his appointment as the CEC promised "a very quick decision" on the poll schedule.
Union Home Secretary N Gopalaswami has been appointed as the third Election Commissioner following the vacancy created by the retirement of J M Lyngdoh. Bureau Report
