Jammu, Aug 01: Curfew was clamped and security forces deployed today in Kishtwar town of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir after a demonstration turned violent and nine people including two officials were injured in clashes, official sources said.
Trouble erupted when some people from Puller area, who had migrated to Kishtwar town yesterday due to threats by militants, held a demonstration this morning and allegedly pelted stones on some shops of another community in the town.
Seven civilians, a sub-divisional magistrate and a deputy superintendent, were injured in the violence, sources said. The officials were roughed up by the people and sustained minor injuries, they added.
The authorities swung into action and imposed curfew, official sources said, adding that police fired in the air and resorted to tear-gassing.
The Deputy Commissioner, Doda, M Iqbal, said that additional police forces and para-military troops have been deployed in the town to bring the situation under control. He said Army has also been kept standby to meet any eventuality.
The Deputy Commissioner said three to four shops have been set ablaze by people, who also indulged in stone pelting.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in other towns of the district to foil any untoward incident, sources said.
