Mumbai, May 07: Keen to provide succour to people reeling under drought in Maharashtra, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has adopted Kumthe village in Sangli district.
"We had approached Amitabh to adopt the village and to bear all the expenses for providing some drought relief measures, to which he readily agreed," Kranti Shah, Director of 'Yuvak Biradari', a youth forum, which has undertaken a drought-relief project, said on Friday.

As part of the project, the drought relief centre would become operational from May 11 and the estimated expenses of the relief measures would be over Rs two lakh, he added.

The centre would enrol all the children and senior citizens of the village, which has been facing severe drought for the past several months, and provide them free mid-day meals, he said.

The children would also be engaged for a period of two-three hours in educational activities, while the senior citizens would be provided care at the centre.

The centre would also enrol the young females and provide them with some training. They would be used as volunteers at the centre and be paid a remuneration, which could be used later for their educational pursuit.

The centre, through its relief measures hopes to provide succour to children and senior citizens numbering over 500.
Yuvak Biradari (Bharat) is headed by actress Jaya Bachchan as its President, Ajit Wadekar as Vice President, Kumar Ketkar as its Chairperson.

The village, comprising a population of around 10,000 persons, falls in Tasgaon taluka, the hometown of state home minister RR Patil.

The cine star is expected to visit the village once the monsoon sets in.

"We hope more families, celebrities come forward to adopt villages like Amitabh did. There are several villages, which need to be adopted and if people come forward, they could provide immense relief to those suffering from the pangs of hunger, thirst and unfavourable climatic conditions" he said.

The organisation would also initiate a similar project at Upalavi village a few kms away from Kumthe village.
