Four special police teams were combing the area to nab the naxals, responsible for gunning down of Ch Gangaram, TDP leader of armour town in Nizamabad district, according to District Superintendent of Police A Ravishanker.
This was the first incident in the year targeting a local politician in the district after formation of People's Guerilla Army (PGA) by banned People's War Group (PWG), the SP said adding the killing has baffled the district police as the slain leader was not in the PWG hitlist. Gangaram, former Velpur Mandal Praja Parishad (MPP) president, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne naxals near his residence at Perkit on Monday, police said.
One of the naxals asked the pillion rider of Gangaram to get down and whipped out a revolver and fired three rounds at him from point blank range, police said. Gangaram was rushed to a private hospital in Armoor town where he succumbed to his injuries, police added.

"We are investigating the case from all angles, the SP said adding that the naxals might have indulged in a retaliatory act as PGA had suffered a debacle last month when three women naxals were killed in an exchange of fire in the district.
