Tokyo, Nov 05: Japanese police deported a Pakistani man suspected of being a member of the al-Qaeda terrorist network last year, news reports said today. The man, whose name is phonetically spelled as Naim Feroz, was arrested on the charge of violating the immigration law in May 2002, Kyodo news said.

Police searched his home in Tokyo's Arakawa ward after receiving information that he had undergone training at an al-Qaeda base in Afghanistan, the Sankei Shimbun said.

They found documents indicating his ties to the group and a photograph of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden during the search, the newspaper said. The man, who was working as a painter in Japan, allegedly called al-Qaeda members in other countries during his stay in the country, Sankei said.

Police deported the man to Pakistan in August last year following indictment in June, the daily said, adding that he has been detained by Pakistan's authorities.
