Bhopal, Nov 14: A day after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh's announcement to file a libel suit against BJP leader Uma Bharati for her wild and baseless charges about him, a defamation notice was today sent asking her to apologise in 24 hours or face legal action.
The notice was issued to Uma Bharti by Singh's lawyer Ajay Gupta asking her to apologise to the chief minister for levelling corruption charges against him failing which a defamation suit would be filed against her.
Terming as baseless and unfounded the allegations levelled by Bharati against Singh from time to time at press conferences and public meetings, the notice said these were aimed at deriving electoral benefits in a wrong manner. Taking strong exception to the charges made by Bharati, Singh had declared here yesterday his decision to file a defamation suit against her on November 17.
The criminal and civil notice, issued under section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, was sent to Uma Bharati's civil lines address here by speed post, sources said. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh advocate general Vivek Krishna Tankha today announced his resignation from the post to take up the Singh's libel suit and appear on his behalf before the court in the case.
