Bangalore, Nov 23: Indian Air Force and the Defence Food Research Laboratories (DFRL) have designed "inflight meals" in the cockpit to provide nutrition to pilots flying long duration on the supersonic multi-role Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft.
With India acquiring the "IL-78 air tank" for air-to-air refuelling of its fighters, aircraft like SU-30 MKI can fly long duration of upto 10 hours non-stop from three hours now.
"The food is nutritious for the pilots to maintain performance and it suits the Indian palate," IAF's Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) Wg Cdr C K Ranjan told here today. In the last one year, Ranjan and Wg Cdr A D Upadhyaya have worked on the meals, it's packing and storage, besides ensuring that the pilot does not get clumsy while relishing the food in the supersonic aircraft.
The Mysore-based DFRL has developed nutritious coconut water and pineapple juice, besides ready to eat food like sooji halwa, ribbon and cheese sandwich and mince meat rice, packed specially for high endurance aircraft.
"The choice for deciding the food is given to the pilot," Ranjan said, adding, IAF and DFRL are working on new food products for the air warriors. IAF also has plans to make its mirage 2000 aircraft capable of air-to-air refuelling and flying it long hours.
