New Delhi, July 13: United Nation's Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is in talks with the Sikkim government for setting up a WTO centre of excellence to help prepare the state in meeting the challenges of globalisation. "We are talking to the state government about this project involving setting up a centre to spread awareness about WTO in the state and prepare it for meeting the challenges of the globalised world," Veena Jha, project coordinator, UNCTAD told media persons here.

The Centre will support states' ministry of industry and commerce in particular and policy makers in general through researched technical inputs, she said, adding the project would be finalised soon. Setting up of the Centre assumes significance as the North-Eastern state will be further exposed to extensive border trade with China with the neighbours deciding to open one more land route.

Citing a study on the trade potential of the state, she said the non-wood trade from north-east had the potential of reaching 11 billion dollars.

She said the Centre would also examine the impact of trade on the social framework of the state apart from exploring the possibilities of trade based on the availability of natural products. Elaborating on the other projects, being taken up by the multilateral organisation as part of the initiative to ensure the reach of the benefits of globalisation to the grassroot level, Jha said organisation was also working closely with small scale industries in southern India.
