Thanjavur, Dec 04: We, Indians, are proud of our rich heritage. But we do precious little to preserve them. Organisations such as Archaeological Survey of India, maintaining our valuable monuments, seek the co-operation of people in preserving them. One way of preserving our monuments is creating an awareness of our rich heritage among school children.
Keeping this in mind, the SPARK, Cultural Enrichment Forum for students of Tiruchi, organised a study tour for 25 students from Tiruchi to the Big Temple at Thanjavur on Sunday.
Students from Jayendra Matriculation School, Ramakrishna Vidyalaya, Sivananda Balalayam and Akilandeswari Vidyalaya (all in Tiruchi) evinced much interest in knowing about the art, sculpture, architecture of the Big Temple built by King Raja Raja Cholan. Kudavayil Balasubramaniyan, Researcher of the Saraswathi Mahal Library, explained salient features of the temple to the students. He also helped them study epigraphy in the temple.
He exploded the myth that the shadow of vimana of the Big Temple would not fall on ground. The students said, ``We visited the temple many times. But the difference in the present visit is that we get to know about the greatness of the temple. We are made to understand what a treasure we have. We can now tell about the temple to others. We take a pledge to preserve such kind of monuments".
According to V.Ganapathi, convenor of the SPARK, the main aim of the forum was to give the students exposure to a variety of experiences which could help them develop their self-confidence, sense of humanism, appreciation and understanding of the wonderful natural environment and cultural heritage. "To give them a feel of the history and ethos of Truchi and its surrounding areas, we took them to Ariyalur (a fossil area), Golden Rock Railway Factory, BHEL and now to the historical town of Thanjavur''.
