Mumbai, June 04: In an attempt to curb the Naxalite menace, Maharashtra government today announced an amnesty scheme for those Naxalites who were willing to eschew violence and surrender. The "Atmasamarpan Yojana" (surrender scheme) for Naxals was unveiled by Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who also holds home portfolio, after the weekly cabinet meeting.

The policy has been drafted following a comparative study of similar schemes of the Centre and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Bhujbal told reporters here.

The scheme would be implemented in the Naxal-infested places like Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia, Yavatmal and Nanded, he said.

After the government announced its intention about the yojana, nearly 60-65 Naxalites surrendered and around 500 others were expected to follow, Bhujbal said.

Asked whether announcing such scheme amounts to admitting police force's failure to tackle the Naxalite menace, Bhujbal said "we have not failed to counter Naxalite activities. But it is an attempt to reduce the potency of the movement".

He said as per the integrated package, the police action against Naxalites would continue simultaneously.

An implementation and co-ordination committee, comprising the district collector, police superintendent and assistant commissioner in the CID - would establish the veracity of claims of surrender by Naxalites, he added.
