Ahmedabad, Feb 24: This one is not going to please HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi. After toying with the idea, IIM-A has decided against increasing the number of students from the next academic session. Reason: the institute does not have the requisite infrastructure to induct more students immediately.

Although the decision was apparently not guided by the Joshi diktat to cut fees , IIM sources said that a higher student intake would have also put an additional burden on the finances of the institute at a time when its income from fees would plummet.

"Once the student pays his fees, everything except the mess charges, is on the house for him," insiders pointed out.

This includes personal computers, telephones, library facilities, books and course material. Thus, insiders said, the only way for the IIMs to have more students and yet not be affected financially was to reduce the facilities given to students.
