Kathmandu, June 04: The Government of India today gifted 16 ambulances costing Rs 8.125 million to different social organizations of Nepal. Nepalese chief secretary Bimal Prasad Koirala handed over the keys of the ambulances to the representatives of the selected organizations in the presence of Indian Ambassador to Nepal Shyam Saran.

"These gifts symbolise close and friendly ties existing between Nepal and India at people's level", Ambassador Sharan said adding, "now the Government of India has shifted its policy of assisting big and infrastructure related areas to grass roots level providing direct benefit to the people".

The Government of India has between 1994 and 2002 gifted 29 ambulances to Nepal and with this the total number of ambulances gifted to Nepal by India will be 45.

"These ambulances will be provide much needed service by transporting the poor and sick people living in remote areas to avail treatment at health centres and hospitals", an embassy release said.

India has recently provided 500 Mahatma Gandhi scholarships to intelligent but poor Nepali students in order to strengthen people to people relations.

India is also considering to help Nepal to build a 200 bed trauma and head injury hospital as the Bir hospital expansion project with the cost of Rs 48 crore, according to embassy sources.

A memorandum to this effect will be signed between Nepal and India governments in July, they said.
