Chennai, May 06: A new 101 MW gas based power project would be set up at a cost of Rs.352 crore at Kuttalam in Nagapattinam district by the Tamil Nadu electricity board, State Power Minister Nainar Nagentheran said here today. Replying to a debate on the demands of grants for Energy Ministry, he told the assembly that a 1000 MW coal based thermal plant would be set up at a cost of Rs.4000 crore at Tuticorin as joint sector project with the state electricity board and Neyveli lignite corporation as partners. The power distribution system in Chennai would be improved at a cost of Rs.441 crore, he said.
He said the state would cross 1000 mw mark in generation in a few months, which he claimed no other state in the country had done. Congress, PMK, CPI-M and CPI MLA’s staged a walk-out when they were unable to extract a promise from the minister that free power scheme to all the farmers in the state would be restored.
