Surat, Aug 06: Continuing its crackdown on illegal and unsafe construction following the collapse of a building killing 43 people on Sunday, Surat Municipal Corporation today demolished a three-storey building in Varachcha area and sealed nine factories, official sources said here. "Officials are inspecting the status of another commercial cum residential building in Mahadevnagar and several other buildings in the congested Varachcha area to decide whether to demolish them or not," town planning officer Ketan Patel said.
The SMC had sealed 39 factories yesterday and nine more today, taking the number of such units to 48. The sources said a five-member team of structural experts have also been engaged by a local NGO and they would submit their findings and suggestions to the inspecting officials.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to the building collapse site on Monday, had said "all unsafe buildings should be demolished." He had also ordered Surat Police Commissioner to conduct a detailed probe into the collapse. Bureau Report
