Indore, Nov 27: The Nationalist Congress Party today said that it would not support Congress president Sonia Gandhi's candidature for the prime ministership even if it was required in the national interest.
"There is no question of supporting Sonia for the PM's post as it would be against the national interest, besides it is the very basic issue on which the NCP was formed," NCP general secretary Tariq Anwar, who is here on poll campaign told reporters.
Anwar, who was once a powerful leader of the Congress Party was responding to a query whether in the national interest NC would support Sonia as PM as it has done in Maharashtra by extending support to the Congress led government.
When told that it was during her tenure that the Congress came to power in over 14 states in the country indicating her acceptability as a leader in the country, Anwar countered by saying "a leader is accepted as a leader only when he/she delivers in his/her own state" and cited the example of Uttar Pradesh where Congress base instead of progressing was eroding.
He also alleged that the congress had said that it was open for alliance at the national level on the lines of NDA, but so far no step was taken.
On the issue of accepting Sonia's off-springs Priyanka and Rahul as the leader of the party, Anwar said that first they have to serve the party and prove themselves like other Congressmen.
