New Delhi, July 27: Plans were on to ensure that India' share in global trade touches 1 per cent by 2007, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Vidyasagar Rao said on Saturday.
The country could play a much bigger role in world trade if efficiency and improvement measures are put in place and a sense of competitiveness is infused among the industry and trade, Rao said while inaugurating a national workshop on energy efficiency in cement industry.
He regretted that India's share of global trade was abysmally low at present.
"We have a target of achieving at least 1 per cent of global trade by 2007," the Minister said.
Referring to cement industry scenario, he said the country has a potential to double the exports from the present level of 5 million tonnes in the next four to five years.
Rao exhorted the cement manufacturers to adopt efficient energy conservation measures which would help cut down the production cost and make the product competitive.
