Redmond, Oct 17: Customers of AT&T Wireless Services are now able to preview new music, download an artist`s image, order a CD, or buy a musical ring tone over their cell phones. The latest announcement by the nation`s third-largest wireless telephone company is part of its most aggressive move yet to market its gaming and entertainment services after completing the roll-out of its new network capable of high-speed Internet connections.
Wireless telephone companies are hoping these kinds of data services will boost revenue in an industry that is seeing slowing customer growth after years of frenetic gains.
AT&T Wireless has so far this week rolled out a Yahoo Messenger mobile messaging service and announced a partnership with Japan`s Sega to offer games such as Monkey Ball and Soccer Slam.
The new music service is being offered in cooperation with Warner Music Group and online retailer Amazon.com. Warner Music Group is a unit of AOL Time Warner.
AT&T Wireless said customers will be able to get the latest song clips, artist information, artist images and tour dates over their cell phones in addition to buying CDs and ring tones and downloading artists` photos.
They will also be able to enter a radio station`s call letters to find out the title and artist of the last four songs played.
The Redmond, Washington-based firm said customers will not have to pay any additional fees for the music services beyond AT&T Wireless standard voice and data plan rates. Ring tones can be downloaded at a cost ranging between 99 cents and $1.99 depending on the tune.
AT&T Wireless said the music ring tones can be downloaded onto two cell phones by Motorola and Nokia that it will offer in the coming weeks.
The Motorola T720 phone and Nokia 3590 phone will come with polyphonic capabilities, which allow melodies to be played through a real speaker in full sound.
The company also said it signed a deal with game developer Activision Incto offer the mobile version of the "Tony Hawk`s Pro Skater 4" game exclusively for a limited time.
The newest version to the best-selling video game can be downloaded onto the Motorola T720 phone starting October 28 for a one-time fee of $5.99, it said.
