Jerusalem, Sept 15: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon today called on Israelis to remain "firm and united," in a speech broadcast on the 29th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, in which he played a key role.
"We have had a difficult year but I am absolutely convinced that our people have the inner strength to fulfil the aspirations of our sons who have fallen" in battle, said Sharon, the right-wing former general and leader of Israel's National Unity government.
"I've no doubt that if we continue firmly, together and with clarity we will succeed in reaching peace," he said.
Some 2,700 Israeli soldiers were killed in the 1973 yom Kippur war, which happened in October according to the Jewish calendar.

Syria and Egypt attacked Israel to try to win back land lost to the Jewish state in the 1967 war. Even though Israel managed to claw back victory after suffering severe initial blows, the war managed to destroy the myth of the state's invincibility.
Sharon played a key role in fighting in the Sinai, leading Israeli forces across the Suez Canal in a decisive counter-attack against Israel. Bureau Report
