Shillong, July 31: Militancy in Meghalaya would be wiped out by the end of next year but this would be possible with people's cooperation, state home minister has said. Robert G Lyngdoh, who is now on a week-long tour to remote and insurgency-infested Garo Hills districts, said militancy has greatly retarded the developmental process in the state, particularly in the Garo Hills and was creating a "fear psychosis" not only among villagers but also among officials, an official release said here today.
But "it should not be an excuse" for the officials for not performing their duties, the release quoted him.
He emphasised the importance of close coordination and cooperation between the people and the administration for solving this menace, the release said.
The government would take stringent measures against those officers who remain absent from their place of work without any reason or were not delivering goods upto the mark, he said.
Lyngdoh said because of insurgency, no investor was coming forward in the region and asked the people to take resolution to fight militancy, it added.
