Kolkata, June 30: Meeting a long-standing demand of wildlife tourists, the tallest watchtower in the Sunderbans, the world's largest mangrove Tigerland, would be inaugurated in the Tiger reserve area of the forest on July 15. The 33 ft tall watchtower, which provides a bird's eye view of the entire tiger reserve, would be the fifth in the forests, Sunderban biosphere reserve director Atanu Raha told a news agency here today.

"Since long, tourists have been demanding for a tower from where they can safely watch the entire reserve area and attach an occasional glimpse of the Royal Bengal Tiger. This tower would be a real attraction for them," he said. Pointing out that there were four other watchtowers in various other areas of the Sunderbans, he said this one would not only be the tallest but also be promoted by the tourism department as the ideal wildlife tourism destination.

The watchtower is situated on the picturesque junction of the three rivers the Sundarikati, Suia and Matla, he said. Raha said, to add to the attraction of the watchtower, the first tourist lodge where visitors can spend nights inside the core tiger reserve and an eco-museum highlighting the rich floral and faunal wealth of the Tigerland, would also be unveiled.

An eco-conservation camp in the remote forest area christened 'bonny' by eminent writer Buddhadev Guha would also be inaugurated along with a forest patrolling camp for deep forests to check wildlife crimes and poaching, Raha added.
