Shillong, Sept 26: Polling for Laban assembly by-poll in Meghalaya began this morning amidst tight security. No untoward incident has been reported, official sources said, adding both the state and the central police forces have been deployed as part of the security measures. An estimated 15,091 voters will exercise their franchise in the by-election for which 13 candidates, including two women, are in the fray, they said. Electronic voting machines are being used at all 15 polling stations. The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP MLA T H Rangad on July 4.
BJP has fielded Rangad's widow Jopsimon Phnbuh, while Meghalaya Democratic Party has pitched his cousin Irene Phujon.
The counting would take place on Monday. Bureau Report
