Chennai, Feb 17: The Communist Party of India (CPI) today announced its candidates for the two seats allotted to it by the DMK, heading the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in Tamil Nadu, to contest the coming Lok Sabha Polls. Announcing this at a press conference here, CPI state secretary R Nallakannu said while former MLA K Subbarayan would contest from Coimbatore, M Appadurai would be fielded in Tenkasi (reserved) constituency. The names of the candidates had been cleared by the party's central committee. Subbarayan, contesting for an MP seat for the first time, had represented his home town of Tiruppur in the state assembly during 1985-88 and 1996-2001. Appadurai, who had also been an MLA between 1981-1986, is a CPI central committee member and a Tuticorin district unit secretary. In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Nallakannu had contested the Coimbatore seat while a candidate of the Puthiya Thamizhagam had contested from Tenkasi. Nallakannu exuded confidence that both the left parties had a bright chance of winning the seats allotted to them as they enjoyed good support there. The CPI(M) yesterday named sitting MP P Mohan and A V Bellarmine as its candidates for the Madurai and Nagercoil seats, respectively. Nallakannu said his party would highlight in its election campaign the ''trampling'' of democratic rights, including those of the working class and the farmers, by the ''oppressive'' Jayalalithaa government. He said the DPA would begin its campaign after the DMK conference at Virudhunagar on February 21 and 22. Bureau Report
