New Delhi, July 17: In a rare move, a calling
attention motion today in Lok Sabha on the issue of FDI in the
print media was converted into a full-fledged discussion by
Speaker Manohar Joshi on the demand of several opposition
members.
Soon after the speaker called congress member Noor
Bano to raise her calling attention, several opposition
members including Basudeb Acharia (CPI-M), Sharad Pawar (NCP)
and K Yerrannaidu (TDP) demanded that the motion be converted
into a special discussion under rule 193 to enable members
from all parties to participate.
They contended that the matter was a very crucial one
and several members would like to express their views.
Agreeing that it was an important issue, Joshi said he had no objection to a discussion under rule 193 if congress and government gave their nod.
Information and broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj and parliamentary affairs minister Pramod Mahajan said they would go by whatever the chair decided and were not averse to a full-fledged discussion.
Congress deputy leader Shivraj Patil also left the decision to the chair but said his party members who had given notice for a calling attention motion along with Noor Bano should be first given a chance to speak.
However, Mahajan said rules should be observed as per 193 if the discussion was being taken up under it.
The speaker said the discussion will be taken up at 1500 hours.
