Surat, July 30: Rejecting a police application seeking 14 days remand of Sunanda Shetty, mother of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and prime accused in a case of alleged extortion, a local court today deferred the bail plea to august four. When the matter came up for hearing before chief judicial magistrate R P Mehta today, the police moved an application seeking 14-day remand for Sunanda. However, it was rejected by the court.
As public prosecutor Jatin Gandhi submitted that he required time for "revision" of the rejection of remand, the court deferred Sunanda's bail plea to August 4. Umra Police have registered a case against Shilpa's parents Surendra and Sunanda for allegedly "hiring" a gangster to extort Rs 80 lakh from a Surat-based businessman Pankaj Agarwal for an advertising film that she did in 1998 for Prafful sarees company.
In keeping with a court directive, Sunanda was present in the court. Surendra has been released on bail after certain conditions were imposed on him. Bureau Report
