Manchester, July 25: Unbeaten Ricky Hatton will make his return to the ring on 28 September at Manchester's MEN Arena against an unnamed opponent. Hatton's promoter Frank Warren said on Monday that he hopes to line his fighter up against either domestic rival Stephen Smith or Hector Camacho Jnr.
The 23-year-old light-welterweight beat Irishman Eamonn Magee in his last bout but suffered his most difficult moments as a professional.
He suffered the first knockdown of his career in that fight but rallied well to win a unanimous points decision.
In his sights are the world title belts owned by Australian Kostya Tszyu, who Hatton hopes to tackle in the next year.
"I would like to think I'll be ready for him in the next 12 months," said the Mancunian.
Promoter Warren spent a large portion of Monday's news conference enthusing about Hatton's popularity in England.
"The biggest attraction in the country, with all due respect to Lennox Lewis and Naseem Hamed, is Ricky Hatton who sells more tickets than anybody," he said.
"Ricky is on the verge of getting to the real big-time and I would like to see him fight on pay-per-view by the end of the year.
Chief support on the bill will be a rematch between Anthony Farnell and London-based South African Rueben Groenwald.
Farnell lost the first bout, in part because of his inability to keep punches above the belt, but he hopes to enact some revenge this time.
