Miami, Sept 01: Tropical Storm Dolly slowed over the Atlantic on Sunday, with U.S. weather forecasters saying the storm will soon turn to the northwest and away from Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands.
Dolly's center was 710 miles east of the Leeward Islands at 11 a.m., near latitude 15.2 north and longitude 50.5 west, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Its west-northwesterly bearing was gauged at 17 mph, down from 23 mph Saturday afternoon. Forecasters said Dolly will most likely gradually turn more sharply toward the northwest over the coming 24 hours.
"On this track, Dolly is not expected to threaten any land areas," the forecasters said in an advisory.
Dolly's maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph, with higher gusts and tropical storm-strength winds extending as far as 45 miles from its center. Forecasters expect little change in Dolly's wind power over the next day.
Dolly is the fourth tropical storm of the Atlantic season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. Bureau Report
