Kannur, July 30: The Joint Trade Union Action Committee of the Kannur Cooperative Spinning Mill announced its decision to launch agitational programmes before the District Collectorate from today to demand the immediate reopening of the cash-strapped textile unit.
The Committee convenor K V Kumaran told a press conference here that a decision to this effect was made after authorities failed to implement an agreement reached last month in the presence of two ministers, a few MLAs from Kannur and Texfed officials following an eight-day indefinite strike that ended on June 17.
The indefinite strike was withdrawn after an assurance that an administrative committee would be constituted by June 23 and the mill would be reopened from July one while the government had entrusted the Texfed to implement the conditions as agreed upon, he said.

The Texfed, which was granted Rs 475 lakhs for the revival of sick textile units, agreed to sanction only Rs 14.71 lakhs alongwith cotton materials required for running the unit for at least a month and kept Rs 450 lakhs with it as fixed deposit, Kumaran alleged.

He said from the amount sanctioned by the Texfed, Rs 4.71 lakhs was paid towards paying outstanding electricity charges while another Rs 10.63 lakhs was taken away by the provident fund authorities after freezing the bank account plunging the textile unit into yet another crisis.
