New Delhi, Feb 14: It's chaos and more chaos for Delhi on all fronts - be it construction, water, power or sanitation.

The latest in the list is the recent government order to legalise illegal construction in DDA flats which experts say will bring more chaos to the city rather than offering any relief. Haphazard growth of Delhi will bring more chaos to its 14 million population and there is an urgency to readjust them, they say.

The capital has around 26 lakh people living in 1071 unauthorised colonies and another 14 lakh people in thousands of J J clusters. "Density of Delhi is far less than any other major city of the country. There is an urgent need to readjust the population with close cooperation of planners, experts and people's participation," says Prof Amitabh Kundu of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

"Haphazard growth of the city has become a big problem and we need to seriously think about it," Vijay Risbud commissioner (planning), Delhi Development Authority says. "The decision will benefit those people who are economically and politically powerful, at the cost of others. Besides, the decision has political significance in an election year," Kundu says.

However, Madan Lal Khurana, president, Delhi BJP says: "Ninety per cent of the occupants of DDA flats are law abiding citizen and it will end corruption and inspector-Raj in the whole department forever."
