New Delhi, Feb 03: India on Tuesday asked SAARC member nations not to encourage terrorists or undertake any activity which could be detrimental to the security of their neighbours as such action could boomerang on the countries themselves. "The bottomline in our relations with neighbours must remain the need to be sensitive to each other's security concerns and to neither encourage nor undertake any activity that might be detrimental to the security and welfare of the neighbour," External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said in a lecture here on '12th SAARC Summit and Beyond'.

Asking the member nations to draw a lesson from Bhutan's action against militants within its territory, he said "encouraging non-state actors, terrorists and other elements by providing sanctuary and support is not only violative of UN Security Council resolution 1373 but can also boomerang on the countries who provide such support".

Hinting at Pakistan, Sinha, while delivering the 7th Dinesh Singh memorial lecture, said several examples had been seen in "our immediate vicinity and it would be wise for everyone to learn from these developments. Mere denials will not suffice.

"Inspiration should be drawn from the courage and foresight with which Bhutan has moved against elements within its borders which were threatening its own sovereignty as well as the security of India," he said. Bureau Report
