Ahmedabad, Dec 01: Nearly 15 per cent voters had exercised their franchise in the byelections for the Jamalpur assembly constituency in the first three hours of polling, which began peacefully amidst tight security at 8 am today. There are 138,000 voters, including 66,000 women, eligible to cast their vote at 132 polling stations, of which 85 are categorised as sensitive.

Queues of voters had begun to from at the polling stations since morning and by 10 pm hours, nearly 11 per cent had cast their vote. Voting picked up briskly later, official sources said.
The byelection was necessitated due to the death of sitting MLA Usman Ghani Devdiwala, chief whip of congress legislature party, a few months ago.

A total of nine candidates are in the fray, including three independents. The BJP has fielded former Ahmedabad Mayor Laljibhai Parmar, while the Congress nominee is Shabbibhai Khedawala.
Counting of votes, polled through the electronic voting machines, will be taken up on December 4.
