NY, May 17: "General Hospital" celebrated its 40th anniversary season by claiming three major honors, while an even older soap opera, "As The World Turns," won best drama series on Friday at the 30th annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Maurice Benard won as outstanding lead actor in a drama, Vanessa Marcil was named best supporting actress and the show's writing team was honored in the haul enjoyed by ABC's "General Hospital."
"As The World Turns," the CBS daytime series that debuted in 1956, claimed its fourth Emmy as best drama, and cast member Benjamin Hendrickson won as outstanding supporting actor.
Susan Flannery won her second successive best actress award, and fourth Emmy overall, for her role in the CBS series, "The Bold and the Beautiful."
The directing team for ABC's "All My Children" won its second Emmy award in its 15th nomination in the category.
Wayne Brady, who hosted the nationally televised awards show, was doubly honored in the talk show categories. He was named outstanding talk show host, and his syndicated "The Wayne Brady Show" shared top talk show honors with ABC's "The View," which won for the first time in its sixth nomination.
"Jeopardy!" was also a double winner. The syndicated program was cited as best game show, while Alex Trebek collected the Emmy for best game show host.
Two perennial PBS favorites scored victories in programming for younger audiences.
"Sesame Street" won for the 10th year in a row as the outstanding preschool children's series, and "Reading Rainbow," won as best children's series for its 19th Emmy overall.
Art Linkletter, whose "House Party" daytime variety show and "People Are Funny" game show were both among the longest-running programs on television, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
