Gangtok, Feb 12: Employees of public-sector banks in Sikkim today struck work to register their shock and outrage over a violent bank robbery of an SBI branch in which a manager was killed and over Rs seven lakh were stolen. The strike called by Bank Officers' Association affected banking services throughout the state.
Wearing black badges, almost all the officers and employees of public sector banks in the state took out a rally here protesting the killing.
D B Diyali, 48, the manager of SBI's Namthang Branch in south district, was strangulated to death inside the bank on Monday evening. The killers then decamped with over Rs seven lakh cash.
Meanwhile, police sources in south district said two suspects - a safai karmachari and a canteen boy – were detained for interrogation in connection with the murder.
The SBI officers' association in a statement said it was perturbing that such a "ghastly crime was committed in a state known for its peace and low crime rates. The incident has also brought to the fore the question about the security of the bank, its officials and other employees."
"Given the fact that employees of the SBI are serving in the remotest corners of sikkim, there is a strong case for the bank management to view the safety and security of its employees in a wider perspective comprehending."
