Three others have been injured while another three were
reported missing since tropical storm soudelor struck the
Philippines in recent days, the office of civil defence said.
The storm intensified today into a typhoon and was
expected to pass close to Taiwan tomorrow.
At least four of the dead in the Philippines were children, including two 3-year-old boys, one of whom drowned in the eastern town of Catbalogan while the other was buried in a landslide in the central town of Leyte. They were among eight people who died on Sunday, while another person drowned yesterday.
About 300 people have been displaced, officials said.
Authorities issued a storm alert no 3, out of a maximum four, in the northernmost Batanes group of islands, the Babuyan island and the northern portion of Cagayan province, all in the northern Philippines.
The typhoon, packing winds of 120 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 150 kph, was moving northwest of the country at 19 kph, but was forecast to turn northeast close to Taiwan tomorrow and head toward southern Japan on Thursday.
